Groundsure.io - practical help

How do I find a specific address or location?

There is a search bar available on landing in which you can search by address (or address part, e.g. postcode) or, if you have them, by coordinates (eastings and northings in British National Grid).

Why is my address not showing?

For now we have limited the search results to 6 returns to avoid returning a long list of addresses. The more information you put in the search the greater the likelihood of returning the address you are looking for. As an example, typing the postcode and the property number has a better chance of returning the address you are looking for compared to just the postcode.

How do I draw a site?

Drawing tools can be found on the right hand side of the map and accessed through the pencil icon. There are multiple ways to define your site.

  • The polygon tool allows you to draw a free hand polygon (point by point)
  • The auto-select tool lets you use features on the base-map to build out your site of interest
  • The rectangle tool will drop a 1 hectare rectangle centred on your chosen location or map. You can then edit this by increasing/decreasing the area of the rectangle, moving the location and rotating
  • The line tool is suited for those working on long linear sites such as railway and traffic corridors. Start by drawing a line and then apply a buffer to this line to define your site.

Instructions for all our drawing tools are given in the top right corner of the screen when you active them.

I have my site saved as a shapefile, is there a way I can upload this to Groundsure.io?

There is indeed! The upload tool on the right hand side of the map allows you to upload a shapefile. Simply drag and drop the shapefile (either the .shp itself or as a zip file) into the modal or click `Upload a file` to navigate through your native file explorer to the required shapefile.

During upload we will validate the geometry of the file (checking for geometry type, self-intersections and holes in polygons). Once verified you will be able to add to the map and use this for your investigations and orders.

How do I find out more information about my site?

Add data to the map via the ‘Layers’ menu on the left-hand navigation bar - here you will be prompted to ‘Add data’. Data layers are organised into categories. Click ‘Add +’ to add the layer to the map and your active layers view; where you can turn them on and off, see the key or legend for each layer, and tweak the opacity to get the right view for you.

How do I find out more about the data?

Hit the ‘i’ button from the add layers menu to find out more about each data layer; what it shows, where it’s come from, what sort of coverage is available and any licensing information.

Why can’t I see the high-detail mapping any more?

Some of the content on Groundsure.io costs Groundsure for you to view, so we have implemented a fair use policy. We will be keeping tabs and users viewing too much of the good stuff (the really zoomed in base-mapping) will be cut-off temporarily. If you cannot see the view of high detailed mapping, this will return once you order a report.

Can I view satellite imagery?

Satellite imagery can be added as a layer on the map via the Layers menu. When on the layers menu click 'Add layers' and you should see a card for satellite imagery under the heading Map layers.

There are two different styles of satellite imagery available for you to add to the map. One has labels such as road names and places of interest to help provide contextual information of the location. The other style does not have these labels so gives a clear view of the imagery.
