Active or recent landfill

Layer name: Waste_and_Landfill-Active_or_Recent_Landfill_EA_NRW

This is a polygon based dataset of active or recently closed landfill sites under Environment Agency/Natural Resources Wales regulation across England and Wales, and includes the extent of the area licensed for infilling or the land owned by the operating company.

Historical landfill (BGS record)

Layer name: Waste_and_Landfill-Historical_Landfill_BGS

This is a point based dataset of approximately 3,500 waste sites in England and Wales identified by the BGS as part of a survey carried out on behalf of the Department of Environment in 1973. These sites may have been closed or operational at this time. The index has been corrected and updated to a limited extent, but the data itself has not been changed.

Historical landfill (LA/mapping)

Layer name: Waste_and_Landfill-Historical_Landfill_Local_Authority_Mapping

This is a polygon based dataset of historical landfill sites across England, Scotland and Wales that have been digitised from historical Ordnance Survey mapping (1:1,250, 1:2,500, 1:10,560 and 1:10,000 scales), by Groundsure consultants during the report writing process or additional consulting work, and records historically provided by clients and partners (and digitised by Groundsure).

Historical landfill (EA/NRW records)

Layer name:  Waste_and_Landfill-Historical_Landfill_EA_NRW

This is a polygon based dataset of known historical (closed) landfill sites (e.g. sites where there is no PPC permit or waste management licence currently in force) across England and Wales. This includes sites that existed before the waste licensing regime and sites that have been licensed in the past but where a licence has been revoked, ceased to exist or surrendered and a certificate of completion has been issued. The dataset includes all relevant historic information for the sites that both local authorities, the Environment Agency and National Resources Wales have collected over the years.

Historical waste sites

Layer name: Waste_and_Landfill-Historical_Waste_Sites_GS

This is a polygon based dataset of waste sites across England, Scotland and Wales that have been digitised from historical Ordnance Survey mapping (1:1,250, 1:2,500, 1:10,560 and 1:10,000 scales) where the land use is, or is linked with, the storage, treatment or transfer of waste. Records may also be sourced from Local Authority planning applications supplied by SeracTech, previously supplied by Glenigan. Records will contain details of the associated planning application where applicable.

Waste exemptions

Layer name: Waste_and_Landfill-Waste_Exemptions_EA_NRW

This is a point based dataset of waste exemptions for activities involving the storage, treatment, use or disposal of waste across England and Wales. A waste exemption is a waste operation that is exempt from needing an environmental permit and is described in Schedule 3 of The Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2010. Each exemption has limits and conditions that must be met.
