Enviro + Geo Insight - GIS schema: Soil Chemistry

The information below details all definition of each of the layers in the Soil chemistry group within the GeoPackage, defining each data layer, the attributes of the data and their data types, as well as the definitions for any values that use look up tables

Estimated Background Soil Chemistry

Layer name: Soil_Chemistry-Estimated_Background_Soil_Chemistry_Eng_Wal_BGS

This is a polygon based dataset of the estimated background concentration of potentially harmful elements Arsenic(As), Cadmium (Cd), Cr (Chromium), Nickel (Ni) and Lead (Pb) in topsoil. The soil chemistry data is based on GBASE (Geochemical Baseline Survey of the Environment) soil geochemical data where these are available. The values are estimated primarily from rural topsoil data collected at a sample density of approximately 1 per 2 km2. In areas where rural soil samples are not available, estimation is based on stream sediment data collected from small streams at a sampling density of 1 per 2.5 km2. The stream sediment data are converted to soil-equivalent concentrations prior to the estimation.

Estimated Urban Soil Chemistry

Layer name: Soil_Chemistry-Estimated_Urban_Soil_Chemistry_BGS

This is a polygon based dataset of Estimated Urban Soil Chemistry data across England, Wales and Scotland. This includes estimated topsoil chemistry of As (Arsenic), Cd (Cadium), Cr (Chromium), Cu (Copper), Ni (Nickel), Pb (Lead), Sn (Tin) and Zn (Zinc) and bioaccessible As and Pb in 23 urban centres across Great Britain. These estimates are derived from interpolation of the measured urban topsoil data referred to above and provide information across each city between the measured sample locations (4 per km2).

Measured Urban Soil Chemistry

Layer name: Soil_Chemistry-Measured_Urban_Soil_Chemistry_BGS

This is a point based dataset of Measured Urban Soil Chemistry data from 23 urban centres across Great Britain. The data includes the locations and concentrations (mg kg-1) of Arsenic (As), Cadmium (Cd), Chromium (Cr), Nickel (Ni) and Lead (Pb) in urban topsoil samples derived from the national, high resolution urban soil geochemical data from the BGS Geochemical Baseline Survey of the Environment (G-BASE) project. These are collected at a sample density of 4 per km2.
