# Enviro + Geo Insight - GIS schema: Railway infrastructure and projects

## The information below details all definition of each of the layers in the Railway infrastructure and projects group within the GeoPackage, defining each data layer, the attributes of the data and their data types, as well as the definitions for any values that use look up tables

### **Underground railways (London)**

#### Layer name: Railway\_Infrastructure\_and\_Projects-Underground\_Railways\_London\_GS

This is a line based dataset of the active London Underground network and Docklands Light Railway (DLR) and is sourced from Geofabrik who extract the data from Open Street Map.

#### Layer name: Railway\_Infrastructure\_and\_Projects-Underground\_Railways\_Depths\_London\_GS

This is a point based dataset of the London Underground network and is extracted from the OpenStreetMap features with an added depth below surface level attribute (created by combining TfL station depth data and OS Terrain 50 height data). In addition to depth and track details, records also contain the timetable information for each tube line.

### **Underground railways (Non-London)**

#### Layer name: Railway\_Infrastructure\_and\_Projects-Underground\_Railways\_Depths\_London\_GS

This is a line based dataset of subway lines across England, Wales and Scotland which includes the Merseyrail system, the Tyne and Wear Metro and the Glasgow Subway. Records only include details for the routes of each line. This is sourced from OS Vector Map District.

### **Railway tunnels**

#### Railway\_Infrastructure\_and\_Projects-Railway\_Tunnels\_OS\_VMD

This is a portion of the Ordnance Survey Vector Map District and includes railway tunnels represented as approximate centrelines of the railway that runs through the tunnel.

### **Historical railway and tunnel features**

#### Layer name: Railway\_Infrastructure\_and\_Projects-Historical\_Railway\_Features\_HD\_GS

The data contained within this dataset includes polygonised railway lines from historical Ordnance Survey mapping (1:2,500 and 1:1,250 scales) across England, Scotland and Wales.

### **Royal Mail tunnels**

#### Layer name: Railway\_Infrastructure\_and\_Projects-Royal\_Mail\_Tunnels\_Lines\_PM

This is a line based dataset of the route of the railway lines associated with the Post Office Railway, otherwise known as the Mail Rail. The Mail Rail is a 10.5km long underground railway running through Central London from Paddington Head District Sorting Office to Whitechapel Eastern Head Sorting Office.

### **Railways**

#### Layer name: Railway\_Infrastructure\_and\_Projects-Railway\_Track\_OS\_VMD

This is a portion of the Ordnance Survey Vector Map District and includes railways represented as lines and are broken where they pass under bridges, buildings or other obstructing detail. Railway sidings and the tracks of travelling structures are not included.

### **Crossrail 2**

#### Layer name: Railway\_Infrastructure\_and\_Projects-Crossrail2\_Proposed\_Headhouse\_Locations\_GS

This is a polygon dataset showing the extents and locations of permanent above ground features related to the Crossrail 2 line. The data has no particular attributes as no details are given about the nature of each head house site in the data that was downloaded.

This is a polygon and line based dataset that shows the route of the Crossrail 2 project. Crossrail 2 is a proposed railway linking the national rail networks in Surrey and Hertfordshire via an underground tunnel through London.

#### Layer name: Railway\_Infrastructure\_and\_Projects-Crossrail2\_Proposed\_Safeguarding\_Limits\_GS

This is a polygon based dataset that shows the extent of the safeguarding areas associated with the Crossrail 2 project. Safeguarding protects land which might be needed to build and operate the Crossrail 2 railway from conflicting development. Local planning authorities must consult on all planning applications they receive that fall within areas where surface safeguarding applies.

This is a polygon dataset showing the extents and locations of proposed above ground worksites required for the construction of the Crossrail 2 project, including both shafts and other sites.

### **HS2**

This dataset includes polygon data for the locations and extents of depots included within the HS2 network.

#### Layer name: Railway\_Infrastructure\_and\_Projects-HS2\_Route\_GS

This dataset includes details for the route of HS2, including Phases 1, 2a and 2b, and has been supplied by HS2 and digitised by Groundsure based on plans available via the gov.uk website. For each of these phases the data confirms if it is the current preferred consultation route, the type of track (e.g. above/below ground, tunnel, viaduct), and the maximum speed for the track sections in mph and kph.

#### Layer name: Railway\_Infrastructure\_and\_Projects-HS2\_P1\_Safeguarding\_Subsurface\_GS

This is a polygon based dataset that shows the extents of the subsurface safeguarding areas associated with the HS2 project. Safeguarding protects land which might be needed to build and operate the HS2 railway from conflicting development. In locations where subsurface safeguarding applies, local authorities do not usually have to consult on applications for planning permission, unless the proposed development would extend below ground level. For HS2, subsurface safeguarding is usually put in place when the proposed line of the route is in a bored tunnel.

#### Layer name: Railway\_Infrastructure\_and\_Projects-HS2\_P1\_Safeguarding\_Surface\_GS

This is a polygon based dataset that shows the extents of the surface safeguarding areas associated with the HS2 project. Safeguarding protects land which might be needed to build and operate the HS2 railway from conflicting development. Local planning authorities must consult on all planning applications they receive that fall within areas where surface safeguarding applies. For HS2, the land that is identified for surface safeguarding generally involves surface work and structures associated with the railway where the route is above the ground.
