Enviro + Geo Insight - GIS schema: Mining and Ground Workings
The information below details all definition of each of the layers in the Mining and ground workings within the GeoPackage, defining each data layer, the attributes of the data and their data types, as well as the definitions for any values that use look up tables
BritPits
Layer name: Mining_and_Ground_Workings-Brit_Pits_BGS
This is a point based dataset of mines and quarries across England, Wales and Scotland for currently active and closed surface and underground mineral workings known as the BritPits (an abbreviation of British Pits) database maintained by the British Geological Survey. Details of major mineral handling sites, such as wharfs and rail depots are also held in the database. Where available records include information about operational status, products, lithostratigraphy, chronostratigraphy, pit and operator addresses, and minerals planning authority.

Surface ground workings
Layer name: Mining_and_Ground_Workings-Surface_Ground_Workings_GS
The data contained within this dataset includes polygonised features from historical Ordnance Survey mapping (1:10,560 and 1:10,000 scales) that involved ground excavation at the surface across England, Scotland and Wales.

Underground workings
Layer name: Mining_and_Ground_Workings-Underground_Workings_GS
The data contained within this dataset includes polygonised features from historical Ordnance Survey mapping (1:10,560 and 1:10,000 scales) that indicate the presence of underground workings e.g. mine shafts, across England, Scotland and Wales.

Historical Mineral Planning Areas
Layer name: Mining_and_Ground_Workings-Historical_Mineral_Planning_Areas_BGS
This is a polygon based dataset representing boundaries of mineral planning permissions for England and Wales collated between the 1940s (and retrospectively to the 1930s) and the mid 1980s. The data is held by the British Geological Survey and includes permitted, withdrawn and refused permissions as well as details regarding the name, operator, dates and relevant local authority.

Non-coal mining
Layer name: Mining_and_Ground_Workings-Non_Coal_Mining_BGS
This is a polygon based dataset from the British Geological Survey that identifies areas that could have been affected by historical non-coal mining activities across England, Wales and Scotland. The assessment is drawn from expert knowledge and literature in addition to the Digital Geological Map of Britain. Mineral commodities may be divided into seven general categories - vein minerals, chalk, oil shale, building stone, bedded ores, evaporites and ‘other’ commodities (including ball clay, jet, black marble, graphite and chert). The data is categorised on a 5 tier scale;
- A - sporadic underground mining of restricted extent (rare);
- B - localised small scale underground mining may have occurred (highly unlikely);
- C - small scale underground mining may have occurred (unlikely);
- D - underground mining is known or considered likely to have occurred within or close to the area (likely); and
- E - underground mining is known to have occurred within or very close to the area (highly likely).

Coal mining
Layer name: Mining_and_Ground_Workings-Coal_Mining_CA
This dataset includes polygon data provided by the Coal Authority and broadly identifies the extent of coalfields across England, Scotland and Wales which could be affected by past, present or future coal mining. These areas identify where a CON29M should be purchased (Mandatory in England and Wales, but optional in Scotland) as part of a property transaction.

Brine areas
Layer name: Mining_and_Ground_Workings-Brine_Areas_CBSCB
This is a polygon based dataset representing the Cheshire Brine Compensation District areas that may be affected by salt and brine extraction in Cheshire and where compensation would be available where damage from this mining has occurred. Damage from salt and brine mining can still occur outside this district, but no compensation will be available.
