How to load a GeoPackage

Instructions on how to load the GeoPackage format for our Map Insight (GIS) and Enviro+Geo Insight (GIS) within some of the main GIS packages.

QGIS

GeoPackage is supported in most version of QGIS. The instructions may vary slightly depending on the version of QGIS you are using. These instructions have been written based on version 3.32. There are two ways the data can be loaded

  1. Drag and drop file onto map
    1. Open a blank map or a saved project
    2. Click and hold on the filename of the downloaded GeoPackage in a File Explorer window
    3. Drag this onto the QGIS window, which should open a list of all the different datasets in the GeoPackage
    4. Click the layer name that you want to add to the map. To add multiple layers you can hold the shift key whilst clicking on the layer names or when you have select one layer click CTRL + A to select them all.
      1. Anything with a Description of Unknown means there is no data present within the site
  2. Open via the Data Source Manager
    1. Open a blank map or a saved project
    2. Click the dataSourceManager icon to open the Data Source Manager
    3. Click geoPackage GeoPackage on the list of options on the left hand menu
    4. Click New
    5. Browser to the folder that the GeoPackage is saved to, select the file to add to the map e.g. Map Insight (GIS).gpkg and click Add in the bottom right corner of the file explorer
    6. Click Connect, which should open a list of all the different datasets in the GeoPackage
    7. Click the layer name that you want to add to the map. To add multiple layers you can hold the shift key whilst clicking on the layer names or when you have select one layer click CTRL + A to select them all.
      1. Anything with a Type of Unknown means there is no data present within the site

ArcGIS Pro

GeoPackage is supported in version 1.1 and upwards of ArcGIS Pro

  1. Open a blank map or a saved project
  2. On the top ribbon select Map > Add data
  3. Navigate to the folder hosting the GeoPackage to be added into ArcGIS Pro.
  4. Select the GeoPackage and click Open. 
  5. Select a single layer by clicking the name, or select multiple layers by holding down the shift key when clicking.
  6. Once the layers have been selected click Ok to add to the map.

ArcMap

GeoPackage is supported in version 10.2.2 and upwards of ArcMap. If you are running an early version of ArcMap you will nee to update your version or upgrade to ArcGIS Pro in order to open the GeoPackage.

  1. Open a blank map or a saved project
  2. Click the Add data button, or from the file menu click Add data > Add data
    1. You may need to set the folder connection to the folder where the GeoPackage has been saved. You can set this file path by clicking the Add folder button.
  3. Select the GeoPackage and click Open. 
  4. Select a single layer by clicking the name, or select multiple layers by holding down the shift key when clicking.
  5. Once the layers have been selected click Add to add to the map.

MapInfo

GeoPackage is supported in version 15.2.2 and upwards of MapInfo. It can open vector data (points, lines and polygons) from the GeoPackage but cannot load raster (image) data.

Please note the Map Insight - GIS GeoPackage will not load in MapInfo due to a known limitation with this software. If you are a MapInfo user and would like to use the Map Insight - GIS data, please get in touch with us and we can provide options

  1. Open a blank map or a save project
  2. Select Open > Open table from the top ribbon
  3. Navigate to the folder hosting the GeoPackage to be added into ArcGIS Pro.
  4. Select the GeoPackage and click Open. 
  5. Select the layers you wish to load by checking the checkbox next to the name of the layer you wish to load.
  6. Once the layers have been selected click Ok to add to the map.
